Don't OPEN THAT DOOR!!!

We've all said it while watching a Horror Movie..sometimes a comedy..
DO NOT OPEN THAT DOOR!!!!
Of Course we know they're going to open it. Otherwise the flick would stall. SO they open the door, we gasp in fear, scream from what ever, then relax a little to continue to watch.
Insidious: The Last KEY *** 1/2

an entire movie about opening physical and Metaphysical doors. There are a few things that keep a franchise fresh is to jump around in time. Or going more in-depth into a character that was previously there for support, but you want to know more. The Last key goes more indepth into Elise Ranier the
Medium/Para psychologist introduced in Insidious (1) called upon in order to save a child of a couple. This time, its more of her tragic history.
A job in New Mexico, brings her back to her childhood home, owned now by Ted Garza (Kirk Acevedo) . The house sits on a property of a prison that participated in Executions. Ted as the new owner keeps having creepy things going about the house to the point of where he can't sleep, and per usual needs help of the paranormal kind.
*SPOILER ALERT**
Backstory is that while younger, Elise would see the spirits of those just executed, and additional ghosts. Her father Gerald (Josh Stewart) , a guard at the prison didn't believe in spirits and so forth and would beat her and we suspect he beat her mother as well. Her Mother, Audrey ( Tessa Ferrer) would comfort her as best as she could, until one night after a particularly bad episode between Elise and her Father she's sent to the basement and is taken over by a spirit. While in a catatonic state her mother tries to wake her, and the spirit kills her mother. . As a result the relationship is ruined between Elise and her father. Elise runs away in her teens leaving her brother behind after she sees a woman in the laundry room.

Jump however many years into the present and BLAM both her, and her dynamic duo of nerds (Writer Leigh Whannell [Specs] and Angus Sampson [Tucker]) are back at her old home, going through rooms while Ted walks around asking, demanding that they stay in only that room.
** SPOILER ALERT***
They don't stay in the room, and end up chasing a ghost down to the cellar after finding some keys, and what they find.......Is a woman locked up in a "secret room".  AS in a LIVE, BREATHING, OMG what they hell did I walk into when I opened up that door WOMAN. A woman eerily similar to the one before that prompted her leaving her home in the first place back in 19??
Cops come ask some questions, after you know foiling kidnapping/Murdering Teds plans. YAY for the ghost hunters.

Elise, and the guys run into her Brother, and her nieces at a diner. (Hilarity ensues w/both guys and her nieces) An unpleasant exchange, and then a revelation about one of the nieces. Prompts the Brother (Bruce Davison) to go back looking for a long lost keepsake Elise found while working the house and conveniently at the Police Station being questioned.

*Rant* Common sense, says don't go back into a haunted house that is currently involved in a kidnapping/murder investigation but, hey when its a childhood keepsake lets just ransack the place instead of talking to a sibling, and bring your daughters with for whatever reason. Then be super surprised, and aggravated when one of the daughers is attacked. By a Spirit. That was haunting the place to begin with! *Rant OVer*

Elise goes back to the house sensing some evil, and does some investigating of her own, not happy with just solving one kidnapping, they discover suitcases of bodies in a part of the cellar. Some of the cases so old, they had to have been done by her father as Ted is not old enough to have been alive at the time. A spirit guides Elise and her  "Sensitive" niece to attempt to save the Niece that was attacked. By OPening up the Metaphysical doors. RED DOORS.
Again, with Opening of doors. She's caught by a particularly nasty looking and behaving Entity (that has a face that only PREDATOR could love) and see's the spirit of her father across the way. The Entity, being you know that stand up Entity that he is(NOT), has Elise beat the living crap out of her Father.  Angry at him for his treatment of her gift, and the bones discovered, she complies but has a realization and stops. As a result she's attacked, and her fathers spirit is punished for interfering * little misty*
REmember that keepsake that she found, that her brother wanted? Turns out that Keepsake, when used calls up the Spirit of her Mother. She saves Elise, The sensitive niece, and the other by giving the Entity a swift kick.
*CRIES*
Movie ends with a call from the couple from the 1st insidious.

PROS:
Less is more. Yes there is some CGI but its not used heavily where it becomes distracting. With the amount the franchise alone has brought in, they could've gone overboard.

Emotional investment in all of the characters...Minus the one Dumb Niece (you don't go into the attic or cellars of haunted houses....ALONE)  This is probably one of handful of movies that have made me mist up. This is the only "Horror" movie that has ever made me cry. Maybe I'm still grieving from my own loss.

Lin Shay- MIC DROP
Josh Stewart- I've paid attention to him since THE COLLECTOR came out, and the sequel THE COLLECTION (available on Netflix) and he's only gotten better.
Tessa Ferrer- I would like to apologize to Tessa, I've never known her name until this movie, but I have seen her around, and I've always called her Sandra Bullock 2.0.

Cons:
Seriously, I cried. I don't like it when I cry...in Public.
A little more could've been done with TED (Kirk Acevedo) it was withhttps://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=1578829636289095449#editor/target=post;postID=5483552805270294733;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=0;src=postname his plot that things became a muddled.

Over all. Watch it, Last Key was far better than expected. Much better than the 3rd chapter. Its approaching the Month mark as far as being in theaters so you may be able to catch a Matinee to make it worth while. Even if you wait to rent, its worth it. It didn't go for cheap Jump Scares, its not gory. There aren't a lot of Horror franchises that have gotten better by the fourth film. That is not the case with Last Key. I'm interested to see where Whannell will go with this as it is Time Jumping, and there is a shift in Characters. The first was about the family saving their son, the second about attempting to save the family from the father, and trying to save the father. The third, took the focus off of that family, and brought in new characters but Elise and her dynamic duo of nerds stayed the same. We already know what DOOR has been opened to Elise, the question is: will she survive walking through it this time?

This post is NOT brought to you by HARDEES

Hey Hey Everyone, HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
I couldn't let this first month pass us by without an update here on POPCORN & MILK.

DEN OF THIEVEs: **

Only two stars out of a possible five and that is being nice. While the name is appropriate for the plot in the flick it could also apply to the writer/director Christian Gudegast and whomever supported it, clearly its fleecing people of cash, and other artists.
Let me explain this a little further without going onto a rant. Den of Thieves takes everything that was good about : The Usual Suspects, Heat, The Town, and insert any additional Heist movie, and makes your neighbors cat eat it, then served us the regurgitated hairball from the cat.

Pro:
Decent cast. They did the absolute best that they could. O'Shea Jackson Jr, has 6 credits to his name, so I'll let him pass with you did good, but improvement is needed in the future.
Inclusion of other nationalities . Hawaiians, Samoans, and others Represented. Sure minor roles, but they were there. THERE WAS SO MUCH BROWN GOODNESS.

Con:
Blatant theft of almost every somewhat decent action/heist flick in the past 30 yrs
Random scenes that do nothing
Action sequences that could've been executed better.
Hardees/Carl Jr's Placement. (

Overall:
I would probably watch this again. If only to see if I was being overly harsh.
Its entertaining. It will provide from a break from reality if needed. The stand out is Pablo Schreiber. Intense performance that has you rooting for the bad guy and at the end you feel as a viewer  a little bad as to what occurs to his character.
Gerard Butler didn't dial in this performance, but went a little over the top to the point of where I lost interest. That and the unnecessary Close-ups and my personal favorite whenever it used. The Soul Searching on the beach Stance. You know the one. A character is standing on the beach wondering about their life choices, mainly why are they standing on a beach, fully clothed, while the world is unraveling and they have sand in their navel.
O'Shea Jackson I look forward to seeing what else he can do. I'm still out on the fence whether or not the character bothered me, or the execution of the performance bothered me.

As always make your best judgement with your viewing choices. For this one, I would rather watch the trailer, and add on the last 20 min of the actual movie to feel satisfied.

Personal Shopper *eye roll*

Personal Shopper * 1/2 of a star
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to watch either The Last Word w/Shirley Maclaine or Personal Shopper w/Kristen Stewart. I owe Shirley a bouquet of flowers, and a nice red wine as an apology for choosing the Hot Mess that is Personal Shopper.  I had to sit and think for a few weeks as to whether or not I was being overly harsh. Or maybe I've settled into the midwestern American way of thinking
about Cinema. As in not being into European made films that aren't straight forward and laid out in nice neat packaging.
Nope.
While I may not be a Francophile ( lover of all things French) I refuse to believe that being an American means I can not understand this movie.
I can list other french movies, and their American counterparts, in which the European version are far superior.
This. Is. Not. ONE. Of. THEM.

Watch the Video of the trailer if you have not already, and then proceed to read the rest of this post .

Done?

Immediate issue: Mislabeling of this film and general misdirection. After viewing the trailer, it leaves the audience with the " Oh this may be an ok thriller/horror movie"
WRONG, its a lackluster drama that amped up the trailer to get more butts in seats. Brilliant Marketing, horrible delivery.

Pros:
There is one moment of absolute vulnerability by Kristen Stewart that floored me. She's a on train heading to London and breaks down in grief, and attempts to hide it from the other passengers. This is the only 2 minutes of the movie that are worthwhile.

Semi decent cgi for the "malevolent entity"

Cons:
Directors choice to drive the movie for what seems like 45 min in a world of  'texting' and watching youtube.
Kristen Stewart constant blinking, verbal spurts and tics.
Bad Writing.

Overall: I would probably watch this one more time. After that, nope. As far as a recommendation, If you're at the Redbox, and you have a choice between this movie, and any movie that Nicolas Cage has done Post Ghost Rider.......leave the redbox, go home, and read a book.

Extended TL:DR commentary:
**** SPOILER ALERT*****
She's not a medium, she is what people would call a Sensitive. Mediums are able to communicate with the dead using whatever skill or talent that they have either they hear/feel a presence and communicate verbally, through signs, or drawing/writing.  Maureen is a Sensitive, she can sense a presence, but either through her own lack of training/ability is unable to communicate. This
misnomer I'm going to chalk up to bad writing and little to no research.

20 minutes in, she's in a gorgeous house that her twin bro has died in. She's waiting for a sign, and a"malevolent" female apparition shows up. Maureen cowers in the corner, screams and then the apparition disappears after destroying a drawing, a table, turns on some water faucets, and scratches up the walls. At this point, my interest that was peaked...IS NOW lost. I, no longer feel anything towards this character, and should have left the theater. Why? because what person claims to be a medium and then flips out.
But that house though, FABULOUS.
Maureen after getting scared  informs the potential buyers of the house that, oh you know the Spirit is gone, and probably won't be coming, No big deal. (LIAR)
We finally get to the part where the title of the movie comes in, Personal Shopper, she's an American working as a personal shopper for a French celebrity. A job that she detests, on all levels minus the pay. It is at a brief encounter at her employers Flat (apartment) that we meet Ingo the hot/cold lover of the french starlet that employs Maureen. To this complete stranger she in a moment of vulnerability reveals yet again, about her dead bro, and plans to wait for a "message" from him. In addition to how much she dislikes her job, yet declines an offer of something better from Ingo.

Issue #3
Immediately after this meeting, Maureen starts receiving mysterious texts from an unknown number that she immediately suspects is her dead bro.
For the next what seems like 45 min, the audience. READS the texts  in addition to watching youtube videos on Klimt the painter, and seances.
In reality it was probably 25, but Oof. It is a ballsy move to use text messaging as a way to drive a film. I come to a movie to get away from texting, not to be subjected.

Issue # 4
Suspension of disbelief. The term suspension of disbelief or willing suspension of disbelief has been defined as a willingness to suspend one's critical faculties and believe the unbelievable; sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment.

Completely and utterly blown, insultingly so. I can maybe believe that her dead bro is sending her text messages, and asking questions that rattle her soul.
What I can NOT believe is that her dead bro is leaving hotel room keys.
You READ that right!!  HOTEL ROOM KEYS!!!!  An non corporeal being leaving HOTEL ROOM KEYS!!!  I refuse to believe anyone  real or fiction can be that dumb.

Issue #5
I want to like Kristen Stewart, she has an interesting body of work. She's grown a lot since the first time I saw her in "Panic Room". What annoys me to non end, is her constant use of blinking, and body tics to convey some sort of emotion.
Its distracting, the constant blinking, is she delivering lines via morse code, or like The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The tics, I honestly haven't seen someone shake as much since I watched a comedy special featuring Richard Pryor before he died.
The verbal starts, and stutters along with the blinks and tics, is a cheap choice as a show of character, and to repeat it for different characters in her career I fear may be indicative of flat out laziness. In this case, it was distracting. I was not picking up on a woman that was distraught. With one exception of a moment on a train to London, Maureen breaks down in tears and hides her face from the rest of the passengers. Outside of that...Meh.

Issue #6
Dead Bro shows up 15 min before movie ends, Maureen barely notices. Really? but seriously? Really?

BLAAANNCHEE You didn't EAT Your DIN DIN

Grab your vodka or whiskey drink, put on your fanciest hat and get ready for an hour of fabulous that only Ryan Murphy could provide.
March 5th (TODAY OMG  ðŸ˜˜) on The FX (contact your local provider for channel)  9pm CST
FEUD debuts. Yes,Yes,Yes darling. I saw the trailer about a month ago, and have been practically jumping up and down with glee in anticipation. For those of you who are like "What??" Feud is based on the two Screen Legends Joan Crawford, and Bette Davis and their Rivalry through out their Reign in Hollywood. Old Hollywood, you know the Hollywood where you had to have more than a reality tv show, a famous parent and dare I say a breath of talent. *sips Vodka*
Anyhoozle, I managed to snag a ticket to a screening almost two weeks ago at the Landmark Theater and was pleasantly greeted by two impersonators.
"Feud" is not about throwing shade as only two queens of the silver screen can, its about the fight that occurs in order to reign. The theme throughout the hour is that its a constant battle for women in Hollywood. Getting noticed, remaining relevant, growing old in a business that likes to remain young, and the fight for equal pay continues still.
The series  has a powerhouse cast with Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon Alfred Molina, and Stanley Tucci.  Lange as Crawford is a force but not as overpowering as Faye Dunaway's Mommie Dearest. Sarandon, embodies Bette Davis as only she could. I remember catching an image of her in Kevyn Aucoin's make up book where yet again, she is channeling Bette Davis. Its as if she has been waiting in the wings to do a biopic of her since the passing of Ms. Davis in 1989. Ryan Murphy has allowed her to unleash that beast and you can't tear your eyes away from her. The dynamic between the two of them works and layers that each actress brings to the screen makes the hour slip through your fingers. Lange has the incredible ability to be both vulnerable one moment and within a second be as powerful as lion.  In the time we get to see how each woman is dealing with aging, and as result not getting quality chances to continue doing what they trained and loved because as Tucci's Jack Warner states " Who wants to *uck, an old broad?" Crawford, comes up with a project and a bankable idea to make both herself and Davis in good graces again. Enlisting a friend to direct, and adapt the Novel
"Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"  a thriller that pits sisters against each other in a house in California.  If you haven't seen it, find it, and rent it. I have two copies myself, and you can ask to borrow one of mine.
I'm looking forward to this season with Joan and Bette and there is going to be some embellishment and hype on their rivalry in order to draw in ratings. Lets face it, its FX and not TCM or the History channel. I'm not watching for facts, I'll be watching for an interpretation of era glamour with a history lesson on how far women have come, and how long we have to go in this industry.

TL; DR/W 2016 Part 1

62.  I had the opportunity to see 62 Movies/TV shows in a theater in 2016. Out of the 62, I’ve actually seen 38. The remaining were given to friends, associates and a few randoms.

Part 1 of short reviews:

Sausage Party ***-  Seth Rogen heads up as a Sausage on a quest to go to the great beyond. Throw in a love interest, some pot smoking, and bath salts. I cracked up, sang along w/a few montages, and may actually consider buying it in the near future.
Cons: Not made for children, yet there were children there. (more of an issue w/parents but needs to be said regardless.) TOo DAMN LONG. Seriously, about 25 min could’ve been shaved off.
Pros: Genuinely funny. Not forced.

Suicide Squad ** 1/2:  All Star Cast/Ensemble piece. Rag Team of “Villains” recruited (blackmailed) into “Saving the World”.  I was super excited to this movie.
Pros: Margot Robbie owns it. Crazy, believable, and some actual vulnerability. Viola Davis, also owns the role.
Cons: Cara Delevingne Performance as the Enchantress. Ridiculous amount of movement that is akin to the Floaty figures that hangs outside of Car Dealerships. I dreaded each and everytime she shows up on screen as either of her characters.
Too many Characters. We get it, the flashbacks are there to see why/how these characters end up in Prison. Issue, the time. As a viewer I want to know, but not at the sacrifice of losing the story/plot. In the case of Killer Croc and Capt Boomerang the characters completely LOST. AS in I forgot they were even there.

Dont Breathe ****-  Worthwhile. Side story: A  middle aged white guy in a black trench carrying a backpack was pacing in the lobby area while waiting to see this movie. Obviously everyone is on edge. Not going to pretend, yeah, I racially profiled dude. I calmed down, and the rest of the audience calmed down. Once a very nice woman, handed him a taco. That’s right saved by tacos. CRISIS AVERTED.
Couple of kids (young adults) in Detroit break into the house of a blind man to get some loot to runaway from….Detroit.
Pros: Stephen Lang. The guy has a resume as tall as I am, and has been making movies since before I was a pain in my parents ass. You might remember him from Tombstone, or Avatar. Solid performance. Truly it is him that really makes the movie.
Cons: None really.

Florence Foster Jenkins ** - Meh. The Biopic of a Socialite that enjoys singing, but no one else enjoys listening to her sing and magically gets to perform in Carnegie Hall.
From a technical standpoint, Meryl hits it on the head. She hits every wrong note the way it was supposed to. THe character was majorly flawed, yet endearing. Hugh Grant is his normal Charming self, but there was some underlying depth there that I have not seen for quite sometime, if at all.
Pros: Entertaining, you will guffaw at times. While the story itself is outlandish (yet true) it is warming. Nina Arianda  “Mrs. Stark” the highlight of the entire movie.
Cons: Having to listen to several minutes of singing off pitch, out of tune and wanting desperately to end it all by bursting my eardrums w/my neighbors straw.

Nerve ***- Introverted High School Girl joins in on Daring Social Media game for some quick cash, and a chance at adventure.
Not in High School, went to an all girl catholic school, and back in my day, Yahoo Chats and online forums were all the rage. It was hard to watch w/out being concerned about the Recklessness throughout the entire movie I was clutching my imaginary pearls.
Pro: Dave Franco in his skivvies. General fast paced danger of social media and effects.
Cons: Hearing the gasps at the activities coming from my own throat because apparently I’ve become someone’s imaginary mom.
Underuse of Juliette Lewis.
Only giving it 3 stars for the ok soundtrack, and Franco in his skivvies. I will always
Give a star for partial male nudity. :)

Fantastic Beasts and where to find them ****
Uber private screening where they take your phones, and personal information, and pictures before even entering the Theater. The Movie was not completed as far as CGI, have not seen the finished product.  With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hold a grudge against the Brits for both Harry Potter and James Bond because they are always released around birthday. This was not the case.
The Wizard Newt comes Stateside to fulfill a wish/promise. In his magical case, much like Hermiones bag are creatures under his care for one reason or another. Due to an escape of a few he has to extend his stay to find them in addition to fixing the havoc they have caused.
Pro: Dan Fogler ( chubby man crush).
A mating dance btw Oscar Winner Eddie Redmayne and a Beast.
The thieving little creature wreaking havoc.
Con:  None

Ghostbusters ** ½
Revamped version of the 80's classic. Expected more, still fun to watch but there's a difference between Character and Caricature that needs to be fine tuned if they want to continue with it as a series. The story is familiar but in all honesty, they couldn't come
Pro: Seeing women kick ass.
Con: Kirsten Wigg honestly, there is something about that woman that irks me. Maybe that she has the same monotonous character in everything i’ve ever seen her in.
Chris Hemsworths Kevin- I took offense. Even with the shirt off, I was still offended that while he was there as eye candy, and as a vessel for evil. Did he really have to be that dumb? No, he didn't. It was insulting to my sense of humor or lack thereof.
Infiltrator ***
Decent based on true events about an operative determined to take down the Cartel by “chasing the money” and not the drugs. Worthwhile rent it.

Pro: Benjamin Bratt and John Leguizamo.
Con: Drags on and there are parts that are utterly ridiculous as far as suspension of belief.

The Shallows  **
Surfing on a secret beach on your own, and virtually no one knows where you are. While i’m fully aware that this isnot supposed to be a great action movie sold as a drama. I walked in anyway prepared to roll eyes but still eat my contraband raisinets.
Surfer/med student goes off on her own and winds up being held hostage by an angry shark.
Pro: The Seagull.
Con: Losing about 45 min of life.

Neon Demon ***

Screening with both director and main actress.
80's B movie slick. An underage teen climbs her way in L.A as a model and catches the attention of some truly odd and unsavory industry types.
Pro: Keanu Reeves as the super slimy landlord that till this day makes me gag.
Con: The general WTF did I just watch?
I kind of want to watch it again to be sure that maybe one of my the people i went with didn't spike my drink w/acid. Neon Demon is not a straightforward film its a movie you want to simmer for a while on. While my initial reaction to it is that I don't like the way it was stylized. I get the general message that The Industry can and will eat you alive if not aware and careful.

O.M.G.!!! Popcorn & Milk is finally Here.

I'm not proud for saying this but the only reason I ever watched any of the X-Men movies was to see Hugh Jackman with his shirt off ( and Michael Fassbender) This one included.
I had the pleasure of attending a screening of "LOGAN" at AMC River East  thanks to swifty fingers on gofobo.com ðŸ’‹.
Going in, I had medium expectations. I'm not a huge comic book fan/comic based movies but I do appreciate good actors, and storylines. What caught me about this particular movie in the franchise, is the grizzled look of whom I've always known as Wolverine. From the two other X-Men movies I've seen that featured Hugh Jackman, he's always looked, a bit rough. In this one damn near looks haggard and ready to throw in the towel.
The year is 2029  between the US and Mexican Border. Logan, is working under the name  James Howlett driver to whomever can grease his palms. Grizzlier and grumpier than ever, we see our hero beaten by hard times. Driving a pimped out Cadillac Limo earning enough cash for a boat  for an escape for both Charles Xavier, Caliban, and himself. The plan changes when a woman  with a child pleads for help and offers up cash for a ride to a place called Eden.

Overall thoughts of the movie:
It is definitely worth seeing. The writers gave enough history for Logan where it is coherent for non Comic book fans but not so much as to dilute the current story line. For those who like action there's plenty of it to satiate. For those who like a little more than violence, and shirts being taken off "Logan" has packed the "Feels".
***Spoiler ALERT***
Logan has been hording cash to escape to the freedom of the open ocean with Charles Xavier who is in his care. Its 2029, Charles  is in his 90's. While lucid at times, he does suffer from seizures which can incapacitate both mutants and non mutants. He has become a WMD due to his age, and condition. Throughout you see the dynamic of Logan as the caretaker, and student that is still learning from Charles. As curmudgeonly as Logan seems, he cares for Charles like a Son would despite his own health issues.
Yeah, I said it "Health Issues" As we've gotten older, so has our heroes. Logan is set 12 yrs from now. Logan/Wolverine: needs glasses, has grey hair, doesn't heal as quick as he would like, has gotten a little slow and probably should lay off the drinking. To be blunt he's waiting for death.

When a woman needs a ride via *enter whatever ridesharing app/service* Logan arrives, knowing there's danger. She offers Cash, and leaves a breadcrumb trail to....a new mutant(s)- Laura who has a similar ability as Logan and just as deadly. Oh, and she can't be any older than 12. The real adventure begins as Charles, Laura, and Logan attempt to get to rally point in North Dakota for Laura's safety.
The Road trip is filled with several attempts on their lives. Remember how I said there are "Feels"?
In between attempts of capture Charles insists that Logan enjoy the moments of peace and beauty of a home and family.
There's also few moments where Logan recognizes himself in Laura and as best as he can teaches or tries to teach a few things: One, don't steal. Two, you have to come grips with the people you've killed. Three, we aren't the killers we were made to be.

I can't go into anymore detail without majorly spoiling the movie.
Be prepared to eat your popcorn sporadically and get misty a few times.

Logan comes out this Friday March 3rd, 2017 in theaters nationwide. gofobo.com
